My distinctive background as both a Crown attorney and criminal defence lawyer provides clients with an unparalleled advantage in criminal litigation. After completing a two-year contract with Alberta Justice and Solicitor General, I returned to Ontario to earn a Master’s degree in Constitutional Law before joining Aitken Robertson as a criminal defence lawyer.
Comprehensive Courtroom Experience
My experience spans the full spectrum of criminal law, having both prosecuted and defended cases at various court levels—from traffic court to complex jury trials. As a Crown attorney, I developed expertise in rigorous criminal litigation, frequently serving as lead counsel in cases involving expert witnesses and complex evidentiary issues. This foundation has proven invaluable in my defence practice.
My courtroom experience encompasses a wide range of serious offences, including arson, assault, sexual assault, child pornography, theft, extortion, dangerous driving causing death, and obstruction of justice. This breadth of experience allows me to anticipate prosecution strategies and build robust defences tailored to each case’s unique circumstances.
Strategic Advantage Through Dual Perspective
Having worked extensively within the Crown’s office, I possess an intimate understanding of prosecution protocols and the factors that influence Crown decision-making, regardless of the allegation’s severity. This ‘insider’ knowledge enables me to achieve exceptional results for clients at the earliest possible stage of proceedings. Understanding what constitutes a successful prosecution often forms the foundation for the most effective defence strategies.
Constitutional Law Expertise
My knowledge gained through my Master’s degree in Constitutional Law allows me to provide clients with sophisticated protection of their Charter rights throughout the criminal process. This advanced training is particularly valuable in cases involving impaired driving and other offences where procedural breaches can result in case dismissal or acquittal.
Client-Centered Approach
Effective legal representation extends far beyond courtroom advocacy. Most of my clients have no prior criminal record or court experience, making clear communication and education essential. My primary goal during our initial consultation is ensuring clients thoroughly understand how the law applies to their specific situation, empowering them to make informed decisions about their case.
I am committed to addressing every concern and answering all questions during our first meeting. From there, I dedicate substantial time and focused attention to each case, working diligently toward either a favourable early resolution or developing a comprehensive trial defence strategy.
Practice Areas and Availability
While my practice is primarily based in the Durham region, I regularly assist clients through the firm’s Lindsay and Peterborough offices. I am available for consultation by completing our online form or calling our office toll-free at 1-800-668-1657.
